Yesterday was a big day for my husband and Inn co-owner Steven Weinberg aka
aka the guy who painted all the fish and landscapes that are in the rooms: Pub Day for his new, triple starred reviewed book WHAT IS COLOR? !It’s a 200+ page, thoroughly illustrated, hilariously narrated, global romp through the history of how color pigments are made and used. It’s marketed for kids 5-12ish, but I’ve seen plenty of adults pick up an early copy and get sucked in. It’s funny and fascinating, occasionally really gross, and absolutely packed with information.
Steven spent nearly a decade bringing this obsession to life. That’s nearly 10 years of him emerging from his studio saying, “Casey, did you know that [insert completely-niche-color-fact-of-the-day here]??”

I’m SO PROUD OF AND EXCITED FOR HIM!
If you’re in NYC this weekend you can catch him 11am this Sunday 8/25 at the Montague St. Books Are Magic for a reading/signing and some color activities, or at The Met Museum 1-4pm Sunday 9/8 for a Family Afternoon—Materials Madness drop-in. For locals, in between, at 3:30pm on 8/29 he’ll be at Inness doing more kid friendly color making activities.
You can check out his whole tour schedule here.
Wanna buy a book? Grab one anywhere books are sold! He’s got signed copies at Rough Draft in Kingston and Briars & Brambles in Windham right now, and will have signed copies at Books Are Magic and Community Bookstore in Brooklyn this weekend.
Speaking of books, as some of you know, I sold a novel last fall…!
What do I do when I'm not running the Inn?
There’s a handful of questions I’ve answered approximately 9,478 times and counting over the past decade as I’ve stood behind the bar and brewed coffee or mixed a Room One cocktail.
Publishing is a loooong process. (See Steven taking nearly ten years to make WHAT IS COLOR above!) My manuscript just got turned over to the copy editor, so that means I’m in the very final stages of itty-bitty line edits. I’m super excited for the next steps like designing a cover (I HAVE SO MANY IDEAS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS), and then, the whole thing will sit in the publishing queue until spring 2026. Yup, you read that right. Not next spring, the spring after...! I would maybe sigh heavily here, but honestly I’m too excited about the whole thing for that.
I’ll keep you posted when pre-orders become available and all that fun stuff. In the meantime, in the most immediate future on the writing/reading front here at the Inn, I’ll be reading the nearly 500 applications we received for this year’s Artist Residency! Recipients will be announced mid-September so stay tuned.
Speaking of our calendar around here: there are only 10 more weekends left in our season! We’re sold out for three of ‘em in September plus Indigenous Peoples Weekend, but do have at least one room left the following dates:
This weekend! 8/23-25. Just had a few last minute cancellations, so I’ve lifted the usual 2 night minimum for ya.
Labor Day. 8/30-9/2. 3 night minimum for the holiday.
9/6-8. Just one room left!
10/4-6. Probably your best bet for early foliage! Warm days, cool nights.
10/18-20. Could be peek foliage depending on how the weather shakes out this fall…
10/25-27. Our last weekend of the year, so it always feels like a party. :)
See ya soon?
That color book looks really interesting. I've lately become obsessed with Japanese woodblock prints so color is everything to me now!
